Garth Malan has a BSc in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA from UCT. He is a professionally registered engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa. He worked as an engineer in the rail industry for 8 years, while co-founding an engineering consultancy business and STEM training organisation.

His current research seeks to develop a live resource monitoring system that serves as a decision-support tool for cities. This is premised on the Water-Energy-Food Nexus discourse, which posits that an integrated form of governance yields resource efficiency and resilience outcomes but requires robust methods of resource accounting to be operationalised.
