Prof. David Lam is Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Michigan, USA. He is Honorary Professor of Economics at the University of Cape Town. He received his Ph.D. in economics in 1983 from the University of California, Berkeley, and joined the University of Michigan faculty in 1983. He has worked extensively in Brazil and South Africa, where his research analyzes links between education, labor markets, and income inequality. He was a visiting professor in the School of Economics at UCT in 1997-98, 2004-06, and 2013-14. His collaborations with UCT include the Cape Area Panel Study, a longitudinal survey of young people in Cape Town supported by the U.S. National Institutes of Health. He served as president of the Population Association of America in 2011, and has served as an advisor or consultant to the World Bank, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the United Nations Population Division, and the United Nations Development Program.
